Passive houses (ultra low energy buildings)
The Passive House is the global standard-driver for energy efficiency in buildings. A passive house requires about 10% of the energy used by a typical building in Central Europe. This means energy saving of up to 90%. As a result owners of passive houses are minimally burdened by rising energy prices.
Passive houses require less than 15 kWh / m² per year for heating or cooling; the primary energy use may not exceed 120 kWh / m² per year.
They should not leak more air than 0.6 times the house volume per hour (n50 ≤ 0.6 / hour) at 50 Pa (N/m²) , which means a very good thermal insulation with U <0.35 W / M2k, frames of new technology with U <1.4 W / M2k, passive solar systems and solar thermal systems for hot water use.
